Redistricting Commission Maps

Wanted to share my thoughts on the Redistricting Commission’s preliminary maps of the new Congressional Districts in Washington state.

Each of the four maps presented today draw Central Washington’s 4th district very differently.

While my preference would be that the district include all of the communities that I currently represent, the reality is adding the new tenth Congressional district in Washington state makes that impossible.

In order for all Congressional districts to be of equal population, over 150,000 Eastern Washington residents will be joined in a Congressional district with Western Washington—and these proposals show there are several different options to bridge the Cascade Mountains.

These initial maps are a first step, and odds are near certain that the final map will be different than what we see today.   I encourage all Washingtonians to participate in the public comment process and believe it is important that the bipartisan commission remain mindful and attentive to the requirement in state law that districts maintain communities of interest.
